  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from S. Raymond -- A moving experience in France : I just finished reading this book and was it ever a joy! I found myself stopping as I read to find out how much I had left to read—and it was never enough! Some of my favorite memoir topics are travel, settling into a new home/location, and French and France so this checked a lot of boxes for me but if you enjoy none of these that much but love humor with a soupcon of pathos (think furry friends) this is the book for you. Dogs, kittens, trees, renovations, what's not to like? ( Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from ALB -- Swept into the Thick of life in This French Town : I was swept into Fat Dogs and French Estates IV by author Beth Hasam, and I have to admit, it’s been a wild ride! It’s the only one I’ve read so far. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Valmarp -- Another delightful offering : This is another delightful offering in Beth Haslam's Fat Dogs and French Estates series. Following on from book 3, I really enjoyed reading about Beth and Jack's efforts to renovate their rambling French home. Although it's almost impossible to gain a clear idea of the layout of their property, it doesn't really matter as the couple's enthusiasm for renovation and integration in their French life make up for any lack of visual images of the lovely but run down property they bought. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from fabulouschrissie -- Wonderful, funny addition to this series : I read and loved all of the previous Fat Dogs books. And it seemed to be a long wait for this one to be published. But boy, was it worth the wait! Beth and Jack, with their dog Sam - the eponymous Fat Dog of the title - are happily living in France. But they have another building to restore, so we get to meet some favorite characters from the previous book. Nathan and Jean-Luc are amazing! There are lots more animals; both four-legged and two-legged. And a disaster strikes the estate - how will they recover? Written in Beth's witty and chatty style, you feel as if you're listening to a friend. Highly recommended, this is my favorite of the series so far. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Nancy Gomoll -- Heartwarming : In this 4th book of Beth Haslam’s series, she continues to take us on her journey to purchase a home and set up residence in France with her husband and their beloved dogs. In true Beth fashion, she takes us through the ups and downs that they encounter, the challenges of life in a different country, struggling with a new language, and we get to know their neighbors and workers who are helping to make their dream a reality. Her style is very down to earth and filled with both humor and compassion. Her overwhelming love for nature and the land and animals around her reveal a real commitment to making this world a better place. While this book had me laughing often, it also had me in tears as she faced the loss of beloved pets and the resulting emptiness that left her with. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Swizzlestick -- Chapeau! : Beth and Grumpy Jack dream of creating a wildlife haven in their huge forest. Not only do they find they are responsible for 8 miles of fencing to ensure wild boar don’t venture onto neighbouring farmland, they must also jump through numerous hoops to acquire the mandatory French hunting licences despite having no intention of hunting animals. Only then can they introduce the rabbits and pheasants they hope will repopulate the woods. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 11, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Maggie -- Beth and Jack continue in France to semi retire. How hard can it be. : Two fat dogs and French Estates. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Denowl -- Fat dogs and French Estates . .book 4 : By far the best of Beth Haslams books about her adventures in rebuilding a French estate. Interesting tale told with humour. Her love of animals and nature in general shines through. The chapters are short enough to keep one's interest. Unlike so many authors who thing a chapter must be over 100 pages and filled with unnecessary padding. Well done. I look forward to episode 5 ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 2, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charlotte -- The best so far. : I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books in the Fat Dog series, and each one seems better than the last. What a joy it is to follow Beth and Jack's trials and tribulations with their very high-maintenance French property and of course, their fine collection of fur and feathered friends. Beth has a wonderful way of describing everything and everyone, and I thoroughly recommend this wonderful series of books. Looking forward to the fifth installment of adventures! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Judith Benson -- Fat Dogs and French Estates Book 5 : I just had to read book 4 after the set of books 1, 11 and 111. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 31, 2021 )
